Got a foreign license but want to drive in Melbourne long-term?
Converting an overseas license to a Victorian Driver Licence is a process handled by VicRoads, the Victorian government roads and traffic authority.
There are two main scenarios for overseas licence conversion in Victoria:
- You can drive on your overseas licence for up to 6 months: This applies if you hold a valid overseas licence in English or accompanied by an English translation or International Driving Permit, and you entered Victoria on a temporary visa.
- You need to convert your overseas licence to a Victorian Licence: This applies if you hold a permanent visa and want to drive after the initial 6 months, or if you entered Victoria on a permanent visa and hold a licence from a non-recognized country.
Here's a summary of the process for converting an overseas licence to a Victorian Licence:
- Check if your country is recognized: VicRoads maintains a list of recognised countries/territories https://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/licences/new-to-victoria/convert-your-overseas-licence. If your country is on the list, you generally won't need to sit for a driving test to convert your licence.
- Book an appointment: You can book an appointment online or by calling VicRoads at 13 11 71.
- Gather your documents: You will need to provide your original overseas licence, proof of identity (such as your passport), evidence of your visa status, and an eyesight test certificate from an approved optometrist.
- Pay the fee: The fee for converting an overseas licence varies depending on the type of licence you are applying for.
- Complete the knowledge test and hazard perception test (if required): If your country is not on the recognised list, you will need to pass a computer-based knowledge test and a hazard perception test.
- Take a driving test (if required): In some cases, you may also be required to take a driving test.
