Top 10 Tips to Pass Your VicRoads Driving Test First Time

With a 98% first-attempt pass rate, Freshers Driving School Melbourne knows exactly what separates successful test candidates from those who need a second attempt. Here are our top 10 evidence-based tips from our VicRoads accredited instructors — distilled from thousands of driving test results across Melbourne.

Tip 1: Book Test Preparation Lessons — Not Just Practice Hours

Accumulating 120 logbook hours is not the same as being test-ready. The VicRoads driving test assesses specific skills in a specific order on a specific route. Spend your final 3–5 lessons with a professional instructor specifically focused on the test format, route and examiner expectations.

Tip 2: Know the Test Route Before Test Day

Test routes from Melbourne’s VicRoads centres are not publicly published, but experienced instructors know them thoroughly. At Freshers, we take every test-preparation student through the actual route from their test centre so there are zero surprises on the day. Familiarity eliminates anxiety.

Tip 3: Mirror Checks Must Be Visible

Your examiner cannot read your mind — they can only assess what they observe. Mirror checks must be physically obvious: turn your head toward the relevant mirror so the examiner can see the movement. Many learners glance with only their eyes and lose marks unnecessarily.

Tip 4: Never Speed — Not Even by 3 km/h

Exceeding the posted speed limit at any point during your test is a critical error and results in an automatic fail. On your test day, set your speed 2–3 km/h below the posted limit and maintain it. Use your speedometer actively, not passively. In school zones (40 km/h), this is especially important.

Tip 5: Give Way Generously

When in doubt at a give-way intersection, give way. Failing to give way appropriately is one of the top causes of critical errors in Melbourne driving tests. It’s far better to give way to a vehicle that didn’t technically have priority than to force another driver to brake.

Tip 6: Smooth, Progressive Braking Shows Skill

Hard, abrupt braking tells the examiner you didn’t plan far enough ahead. Start braking earlier than feels natural and reduce pressure progressively as you slow. This demonstrates anticipation — a key assessment criterion. It also makes for a more comfortable test experience for both you and the examiner.

Tip 7: The 12-Second Scan

Examiners specifically observe where learners are looking. Practise scanning the road 12 seconds ahead — approximately 200 metres at 60 km/h. Combine this with regular mirror checks (every 5–8 seconds in traffic) to demonstrate the situational awareness that distinguishes safe drivers.

Tip 8: Keep Left Unless Overtaking

On multi-lane roads, stay in the left lane unless passing or turning right. Lane discipline is assessed throughout the test. After completing a right turn on a multi-lane road, return to the left lane as soon as safely possible — don’t sit in the right lane after the turn is complete.

Tip 9: Communicate Early

Signal at least 3 seconds before a turn or lane change. Check mirrors, signal, check blind spot, manoeuvre — in that order, every time. In your test, a signal given less than 2 seconds before a turn will attract a deduction.

Tip 10: Prepare Your Vehicle and Yourself

Practical preparation matters:

  • Drive the test vehicle for at least 30 minutes on the day before your test — familiarise yourself with its mirrors, controls and braking feel
  • Adjust seat and mirrors before the examiner gets in the vehicle
  • Sleep 8 hours the night before — cognitive performance on a normal night’s sleep vs 6 hours of sleep is measurably different
  • Eat a proper breakfast — blood sugar affects concentration
  • Arrive 15 minutes early to settle your nerves
