Driving anxiety is more common than you think. Kev at Freshers has helped hundreds of nervous Melbourne drivers build genuine confidence — at your pace, on your terms, with zero pressure.
If you feel anxious, tense or panicked behind the wheel, you are far from alone. Studies suggest up to 1 in 3 Australians experience some form of driving anxiety. It doesn't mean something is wrong with you — it means you need the right instructor.
At Freshers Driving School, Kev has spent over a decade working with Melbourne's most nervous drivers — from people who have never sat in the driver's seat, to experienced drivers who developed anxiety after an accident, to learners who failed their VicRoads test and lost their confidence completely. Every single one of them improved.
Not every instructor is equipped to work with anxious drivers. Patience is a skill — and Kev has spent over 10 years developing it. Here is what you can expect from every lesson:
No navigating to a depot or car park. Kev arrives at your home, school or workplace. You meet him in a familiar, comfortable environment.
Before the engine starts, Kev has a quick chat. He asks about your experience, your worries, and what you want from today. No lesson plan gets forced on you.
For very nervous drivers, that might be a quiet residential street at 40km/h. For others, it might be the nearest shopping centre car park. You decide.
Kev speaks quietly and clearly. He tells you what to do before you need to do it — no last-second shocks. If something goes wrong, he handles it calmly with the dual controls.
At the end, Kev tells you exactly what you did well (and there will be things) and gives you a simple, achievable goal for next time.
"I had serious driving anxiety after a car accident two years ago. I tried two other instructors who made it worse. Kev was completely different — calm, patient, never once made me feel embarrassed. After 6 lessons I passed my VicRoads test first attempt. I still can't believe it."
"As someone who had failed their test twice and given up, I genuinely thought I'd never drive. A friend recommended Freshers. Kev figured out exactly what I was doing wrong in the first lesson and just... fixed it. No drama. No judgment. Just results."
"I'm autistic and have always struggled with driving lessons because of sensory overload and unpredictability. Kev adapted everything to suit me — quiet car, clear instructions, no surprises. Best driving experience I've ever had. Passed first go."
Every lesson type is available for nervous drivers. There is no "nervous driver surcharge" — you pay the same as everyone else.
* Free pickup and drop-off included with every lesson. No hidden fees. Book one lesson at a time — no lock-in required.
You don't need to feel ready. You just need to book one lesson. Kev will handle the rest.
Never. Making mistakes is how you learn — Kev has seen every mistake possible over 10 years and treats every one as a teaching moment, not a reason to criticise. Many of his most successful students made a lot of mistakes early on.
You don't have to, but it helps. Even a brief mention — "I'm quite nervous" — lets Kev adjust his approach from the very first minute. There is no judgment attached to telling him.
Kev will calmly pull over or take control via the dual controls. There is no drama. You take a moment, and you continue when you're ready — or you end the lesson if you need to. Your comfort comes first.
It genuinely depends on the person. Some nervous drivers feel confident within 3–5 lessons. Others need 15–20. Kev gives you an honest estimate after your first lesson — he will never recommend more lessons than you need.
Absolutely. There is no package requirement and no pressure to commit to more than one lesson. Book a single lesson, see how you feel, and decide from there.
Yes. Post-accident anxiety is one of the most common reasons people come to Freshers. Kev works slowly and calmly, rebuilding trust in the car before building driving skills. Many post-accident students have gone on to pass their VicRoads test.
