Driving Lessons

Questions about lesson structure, what to expect, and how our teaching works

It varies depending on your experience level. Complete beginners typically need 10–15 professional lessons in addition to their 120 logbook hours. Overseas licence holders usually need 3–6 lessons. Refresher drivers generally need 4–7 lessons. Your instructor will give you an honest assessment after your first lesson.

All Freshers lessons are conducted in a dual-control automatic vehicle. Automatic is the most popular choice in Melbourne — modern cars are predominantly automatic, and removing the complexity of gear changes lets you focus entirely on road awareness and building safe driving habits faster.

Your instructor will introduce themselves, check your learner permit, and do a quick walk-around of the car to explain the controls. For most first-time learners we start in a quiet area — low-traffic streets or a large car park — before gradually moving into real traffic as your confidence builds. By the end of most first lessons, students are genuinely surprised by how much ground they have covered.

Lessons are available in 60-minute and 90-minute durations. 60-minute lessons are great for focused skill work and regular weekly sessions. 90-minute lessons cover significantly more ground per session and tend to produce faster overall progress — ideal for students who want to reach test-ready standard quickly or those who want to minimise the number of sessions.

Yes. Free pick-up and drop-off is included at every lesson. Your instructor will pick you up from your home, workplace, school, or any agreed location across our service area — Parkville, Carlton, Carlton North, Brunswick, Brunswick West, Northcote, North Melbourne, Fitzroy North, Fitzroy, Richmond and South Yarra and surrounding suburbs.

Yes. All professional lessons with Freshers Driving School count toward Victoria's 120-hour supervised driving requirement. Your VicRoads accredited instructor signs your logbook at the end of every lesson. Keep your logbook accurate as VicRoads may check it at your practical test.

You must bring your VicRoads learner permit — without it, we cannot legally begin the lesson. We also recommend wearing comfortable, flat-soled shoes for good pedal feel, and bringing your logbook so your instructor can sign your hours immediately after the lesson.

Yes. Our driving instructor holds a current VicRoads accreditation, a valid Working With Children Check, and full professional indemnity insurance. All required Victorian licensing authority approvals are maintained and current.

VicRoads Test Preparation

Questions about the VicRoads practical driving test and how we prepare you

Yes. Test day car hire starts at $150. Our dual-control automatic vehicle is fully insured, roadworthy, and will already be familiar to you from your lessons. We set up your seat and mirrors before the examiner arrives. Warm-up lesson + test packages are available from $220.

We service Carlton VicRoads practical driving test centre. We conduct pre-test lessons on the actual roads used by examiners at each centre, so you arrive on test day having already driven every road the examiner will take you on.

Yes. We offer 100-minute mock tests conducted on the actual VicRoads routes. Your instructor acts as the examiner — same instructions, same format, same scoring criteria. Detailed feedback is provided at the end so you know exactly what to focus on before your real test.

Your instructor will tell you honestly when you are ready. We will not send you to sit a test we do not believe you will pass — that wastes your time and money. When your mock test results consistently meet the pass standard and you are performing confidently across all manoeuvres, your instructor will recommend booking your assessment.

The most common causes of test failure are inadequate mirror checks, rolling stops at give-way signs, insufficient head checks when changing lanes, speed zone errors, and incorrect roundabout technique. All of these are addressed specifically in our test preparation lessons and mock test program.

The VicRoads practical driving assessment typically runs for approximately 30 minutes of on-road driving. You should plan to be at the test centre for around 45–60 minutes in total to allow for check-in, vehicle inspection, and the debrief after the test.

Overseas Licence & Special Cases

Questions for international drivers, refresher students and nervous learners

Yes. Freshers specialises in overseas licence conversion for VicRoads. We work with drivers from India, China, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Nepal, UK, USA, Canada, and 20+ other countries every week. Most overseas drivers with solid prior experience need just 3–6 targeted lessons to reach test-ready standard in Melbourne.

You can drive in Victoria on a valid overseas licence for up to 6 months from the date you become a Victorian resident. After 6 months you must hold a Victorian driver licence. If your country is on VicRoads' recognised list (UK, NZ, Canada etc.) you may only need a knowledge test to convert directly.

Yes. Refresher lessons are available for licensed drivers who haven't driven in a while, feel anxious behind the wheel, recently moved to Melbourne, or simply want to update their skills. Most refresher students need 3–7 lessons. Your instructor assesses where you are after the first session and recommends a realistic plan.

Absolutely. Working with nervous and anxious drivers is one of our specialties. Our instructor is calm, patient, and never creates pressure or rushes progression. Many of our most grateful students are people who tried other schools and found them too stressful. We teach at your pace, always.

Yes. Lessons are available in English, Hindi, Punjabi, Urdu, Arabic, Gujarati and more. Please mention your language preference when booking and we will do our best to accommodate you.
