After coaching thousands of Melbourne learners through their driving tests, our instructors see the same mistakes come up again and again. The frustrating thing is: most of them are completely avoidable with the right awareness and a bit of targeted practice.
Mistake 1: Not Checking Mirrors Often Enough
This is the number one reason learners fail their Melbourne driving test. VicRoads examiners specifically watch for regular, deliberate mirror checks. The standard is a mirror check every 5–8 seconds in normal driving, plus mirrors before every brake, lane change and turn.
How to fix it: Make mirror checking a conscious ritual until it becomes automatic. Ask your instructor to count your mirror checks aloud in lessons so you get real-time feedback.
Mistake 2: Incorrect Positioning at Intersections
Learners consistently struggle with turning too wide or too tight on left turns, not positioning far enough forward before turning right, and getting hook turns wrong. Melbourne’s inner suburbs have particularly complex intersections.
How to fix it: Practise the specific intersections on your test route. Our test preparation lessons cover the exact routes used at each Melbourne VicRoads centre.
Mistake 3: Inconsistent Speed Management
Speed errors come in two forms: going too fast (even 1–2 km/h over the limit can mean an immediate fail) and going unnecessarily slow. Many learners subconsciously drop their speed when nervous.
How to fix it: Build a habit of regularly glancing at the speedo every 10–15 seconds. Learn to manage speed proactively rather than braking at the last moment.
Mistake 4: Poor Observation at Give Way Situations
Failing to give way correctly is one of the most serious errors — it’s safety-critical and will almost always result in an immediate fail. Common errors include turning right too early, not giving way to pedestrians, and not checking properly at roundabouts.
How to fix it: Before every give way situation, ask yourself: “Who has right of way here?” Make it a verbal checklist until it becomes instinctive.
Mistake 5: Visible Nervousness That Affects Driving
Test anxiety is real — gripping the wheel too tight, forgetting to cancel indicators, hesitating at junctions you’d normally handle confidently.
How to fix it: The best cure for test anxiety is genuine preparedness. Ask your instructor to conduct at least two full mock tests under test conditions before your actual booking. Our test preparation lessons include a full mock test on the actual route so the real thing feels familiar. Our 98% first-attempt pass rate is because we only send students to their test when they’re truly ready.
