Want to pass your VicRoads driving test first time in Melbourne? Freshers Driving School has a 98% first-attempt pass rate — one of the highest of any Melbourne driving school. This guide shares the exact approach that gets our students through first time, every time.

What the VicRoads Examiner is Looking For

VicRoads assessors in Melbourne evaluate five core areas:

1. Observations — visible mirror checks and head checks before every manoeuvre
2. Speed management — maintaining appropriate speed, never exceeding limits
3. Positioning — correct lane choice and lateral position on the road
4. Give way — correct give-way at all intersections, roundabouts and pedestrian crossings
5. Vehicle control — smooth steering, braking and acceleration

The 3 Most Common Failure Points in Melbourne

1. Insufficient observations — the single most common failure. You must make head checks and mirror checks visibly before every lane change, merge, and turn. The examiner is watching for this specifically.

2. Roundabout give-way errors — Melbourne has hundreds of roundabouts. You must give way to all vehicles already in the roundabout. Even a split-second hesitation on give-way is marked as an error.

3. Speed limit breaches — going even 2–3km/h over the limit is a critical error. In school zones (40km/h), residential streets (50km/h), and arterial roads (60–70km/h), speed awareness is essential.
