Every step from your Ls to your Ps — ages, logbook hours, minimum learner periods, VicRoads fees, test centres and how many lessons you'll need.

The short answer

  • Get your learner permit at 16; get your Ps at 18 or older.
  • Under 21: hold your Ls for 12 months and log 120 hours (20 at night).
  • 21–24: Ls for 6 months. 25+: Ls for 3 months. No logbook needed from 21.
  • Pass the hazard perception test, then the VicRoads drive test ($75.30).
  • Most learners take 10–20 professional lessons alongside supervised practice.

Step by step: Ls to Ps

  1. Get your learner permit (from age 16)Pass the learner permit knowledge test (about $50.80 in person) and an eyesight check. You then drive with L plates and a fully licensed supervisor beside you.
  2. Build supervised driving experienceUnder 21: log at least 120 hours, including 20 hours at night, in your learner logbook. Drivers 21 and over don't need a logbook, but still need enough practice to pass.
  3. Hold your Ls for the minimum timeUnder 21: 12 months. 21 to under 25: 6 months. 25 or older: 3 months.
  4. Pass the hazard perception testA computer-based test of how you spot and respond to hazards (about $44.00 in person). You need this before your drive test.
  5. Book and pass the VicRoads drive test (18+)Book online with VicRoads (fee $75.30). The test is about 30 minutes of driving in two stages. You need a roadworthy car that meets VicRoads conditions — most learners use their instructor's dual-control car.
  6. Get your PsOnce you pass, you receive your probationary licence and display P plates. P-plate rules and periods depend on your age — check VicRoads for the conditions that apply to you.
