The day of your VicRoads driving test can feel nerve-wracking — mostly because it’s unknown territory. But the best way to calm those nerves is simple: know exactly what’s going to happen.
Before the Day: What You Need to Organise
- Your test booking — booked through vicroads.vic.gov.au
- Your learner licence — present it on the day
- 120 logged hours — your Learner Log Book must show 120 hours including 10 at night
- A roadworthy vehicle — registered, insured, and with a passenger seatbelt for the examiner
- Hazard Perception Test (HPT) — must be passed before booking your drive test
What Happens on the Day: Step by Step
Check In and Pre-Drive Vehicle Check
Arrive 10 minutes early. The examiner will ask you to demonstrate how to operate the horn, headlights, hazard lights, demister and windscreen wipers. Before moving, adjust your seat, mirrors and seatbelt deliberately — the examiner is watching.
The Drive Itself: 30–45 Minutes
The examiner gives simple verbal instructions — “turn left at the next street,” “take the next available right turn.” You are not expected to know the route in advance. The test covers residential streets, arterial roads, at least one busy intersection, and parking manoeuvres. Inner-city Melbourne tests may include tram tracks and hook turns.
What the Examiner Is Marking
- Immediate fail (critical error): Running a red light, failing to give way, exceeding the speed limit
- Recorded fault (minor error): Missed mirror check, slightly late indicator, imprecise parking
Top Tips for Test Day
- Sleep well the night before — fatigue affects reaction times and observation
- Have a lesson the morning of your test — it warms up your driving and settles nerves
- Signal everything, always — even if no other car is visible
- If you make a mistake, move on — one minor error won’t fail you
- Come back to the speed limit after slow zones — forgetting to accelerate from a 40 zone is a common fault
