Test Preparation

What to Expect on Your VicRoads Driving Test in Melbourne

Your VicRoads driving test is the final step toward getting your Probationary (P1) licence in Victoria. Knowing exactly what to expect on the day removes a huge amount of anxiety and significantly improves your chances of passing first time. Here’s a complete walkthrough from our instructors at Freshers Driving School Melbourne.

Before the Test: What You Need to Bring

  • Your current learner permit (must not be expired)
  • Your logbook with at least 120 hours signed (including 20 night hours)
  • Payment for the test fee (approximately $44.40 — check VicRoads for current pricing)
  • A roadworthy, registered vehicle (or use our test day car hire service)

Arrive at least 10 minutes early. The VicRoads customer service centre will process your documents and assign an examiner. The examiner will then conduct a brief pre-test interview to confirm you understand the test process.

The Pre-Drive Vehicle Check

Before getting on the road, the examiner will ask you to demonstrate basic vehicle safety checks. These typically include:

  • How to check engine oil level
  • How to identify the coolant reservoir
  • How to check tyre condition
  • Adjusting the driver’s seat and mirrors before driving

Practise these checks at home so you can demonstrate them calmly and confidently.

How Long Is the Driving Test?

The driving component typically lasts 25 to 40 minutes. The examiner will direct you through a pre-planned route from the test centre that includes a mix of road types — residential streets, arterial roads, and at least one intersection scenario.

What Skills Are Assessed?

The examiner uses a standardised assessment sheet and records errors in two categories: critical errors (automatic fail) and driving errors (cumulative points). You can accumulate up to 5 driving errors and still pass — but a single critical error results in an immediate fail, regardless of how well you performed otherwise.

Critical Errors (automatic fail)

  • Running a red light or stop sign
  • Causing a collision or near-collision
  • Requiring the examiner to intervene
  • Speeding — exceeding the posted limit at any point
  • Disobeying a give-way sign or failing to give way to a pedestrian

Common Driving Errors (points-based)

  • Insufficient mirror checks before manoeuvres
  • Poor lane positioning
  • Following too closely
  • Failure to signal appropriately
  • Excessive hesitation
  • Incorrect road positioning when turning

The Route: Melbourne-Specific Notes

Test routes vary by centre. Common Melbourne test locations include Brunswick, Carlton, Preston, Bundoora and Fitzroy. Routes typically include tram stops (where you must give way to tram passengers), hook turns in the CBD (if applicable), and a minimum of one freeway or dual-carriageway section if available from that centre.

Our instructors at Freshers know these routes thoroughly and will take you through them in your final preparation lessons so you’re completely familiar with the road environment before test day.

After the Test: What Happens Next?

At the end of the drive, the examiner will park the vehicle and give you verbal feedback on your performance. They will then inform you whether you’ve passed or failed. If you pass, you can apply for your P1 licence on the same day. If you fail, the examiner will explain which errors caused the result so you can address them before your next attempt.

Top Test Day Tips From Freshers

  • Sleep well the night before — fatigue significantly impairs reaction time and decision-making
  • Eat a proper breakfast — low blood sugar affects concentration
  • Arrive in the test car, not a friend’s vehicle — familiarity with the specific vehicle you’ll be tested in matters
  • Breathe and use your preparation — if you’ve done your lessons properly, your muscle memory will carry you through
