Driving Lessons for International Students in Melbourne: Complete Guide 2025

Are you an international student in Melbourne who wants to drive? Whether you hold an overseas licence you’d like to convert, or you’re getting your Victorian driver’s licence for the first time, this complete 2025 guide covers everything you need to know. Freshers Driving School has helped over 1,000 international students in Melbourne earn their Victorian licence — from the University of Melbourne, RMIT, Monash, Swinburne, Deakin, La Trobe and every other Melbourne university.

Option 1: You Have an Overseas Licence — Can You Convert It?

If you arrive in Melbourne with a valid overseas driving licence, you can drive in Victoria for up to 6 months using your overseas licence (and an official English translation if your licence is not in English). After 6 months, you need a Victorian licence. Your conversion pathway depends on your home country:

  • Direct conversion (no test required): UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Switzerland and a few others
  • Knowledge test + practical drive test required: China, India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Brazil, most Middle Eastern countries and all others not listed above

Even for direct conversion countries, targeted driving lessons with a local instructor before your Victorian test are highly recommended — Australian road rules, give-way laws and Melbourne traffic conditions differ significantly from most countries. See our full overseas licence conversion Melbourne guide for country-by-country details.

Option 2: You Don’t Have Any Licence — Getting Your Victorian Licence from Scratch

If you’ve never held a licence, or your overseas licence is not eligible for conversion, you’ll need to earn your Victorian licence through the standard learner → probationary pathway. This involves: 1) getting your Learner Permit (knowledge/theory test at VicRoads), 2) completing 120 supervised driving hours including 20 night hours, 3) passing your VicRoads drive test. Our logbook training programme covers all 120 hours systematically.

What International Students Struggle With on Melbourne Roads

Based on teaching 1,000+ international students in Melbourne, our instructors have identified the biggest challenges for each student group. Students from China and Asia often struggle with giving way at roundabouts (many Asian countries have no roundabouts) and with tram priority rules. Students from India and South Asia often know how to drive but need practice with Melbourne’s strict speed limit compliance and give-way at uncontrolled intersections. Students from the USA and UK often have strong driving skills but struggle with hook turns and left-hand give-way rules. Our instructors tailor every lesson to your specific background.
