Getting Your Victorian Driver's Licence as an International Student

As an international student in Melbourne, having a Victorian driver's licence opens up the city enormously — from weekend trips to the Mornington Peninsula, to getting to work, clinical placements or internships that public transport can't easily reach. Freshers has helped over 1,000 international students and overseas drivers navigate Victoria's licensing system.

The process depends on where you're from. Some international students need to sit the full VicRoads learner knowledge test and complete 120 logbook hours. Others — particularly those from countries with licence exchange agreements — may be able to convert their overseas licence directly. Kev will assess your situation in your first lesson and explain exactly what you need to do.

Two Pathways for International Students

🌏

You Already Have a Licence from Home

If you hold a valid overseas licence, you may be able to convert it to a Victorian licence. Most international students need 3–8 lessons to learn Melbourne's unique road rules before sitting the VicRoads test.

🎓

You've Never Had a Licence

You'll need to get your Victorian learner permit first (sit the VicRoads knowledge test), then complete 120 supervised hours. Freshers guides you through every step from L plates to your full licence.

Melbourne Road Rules International Students Must Know

Melbourne has several unique road rules that international students find confusing. Kev covers all of these in detail:

  • Hook turns — Melbourne's unique right-turn rule at CBD intersections marked with a hook turn sign. Turn from the left lane, not the right. Kev covers this until it becomes second nature.
  • Tram rules — stop when a tram stops to let passengers on/off if there's no safety zone. Do not overtake a tram on the left. Give way to trams when turning.
  • Give-way rules — Victoria's give-way hierarchy differs from many countries. Kev covers roundabouts, T-intersections and unmarked intersections.
  • Speed zones — school zones (40 km/h at certain times), shared zones (10 km/h) and default speed limits differ from many countries.
  • Merging and lane changing — Victorian rules around freeway merging and lane change obligations differ from many countries.
  • Mobile phone laws — Victorian laws on phone use while driving are strict. Kev explains exactly what is and isn't permitted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can international students get a Victorian driver's licence?

Yes. International students in Victoria can get a Victorian driver's licence. The process depends on your home country — some students can convert their existing licence, others need to start from a learner permit.

How many lessons do international students need?

International students with existing driving experience typically need 4–10 lessons to adapt to Melbourne's road rules and pass the VicRoads test. Students with no prior driving experience need more lessons.

Do you pick up from university campuses?

Yes. Freshers picks up from University of Melbourne, RMIT, and student accommodation across Carlton, Parkville, Fitzroy, Brunswick and the Melbourne CBD — all included in the lesson price.

Is your instruction in English?

Yes — Kev instructs in clear, simple English. Many international students from non-English-speaking countries have praised how clearly and patiently Kev explains road rules and driving techniques.

Can I convert my overseas licence instead of starting from scratch?

Possibly. Victoria has licence recognition agreements with several countries. Kev can advise you in your first lesson on whether you qualify for direct conversion or need to go through the full learner process.
